Standing opposite the United Nations at the Place des Nations, the monumental Broken Chair has become inseparable from Geneva’s international landscape. Its three intact legs and dramatically broken fourth leg form a powerful silhouette against the Palais des Nations and its avenue of flags.

Created in 1997 for Handicap International, the Broken Chair was conceived in support of the international campaign against anti-personnel landmines. Its shattered leg represents the devastating injuries caused by these weapons and serves as a lasting appeal for the protection of civilians and respect for human dignity.
